Web 2 and School Library 2

This page has been created to help with discussions and information about Web 2.0 and Library 2.0

What is Web 2.0?

The term "Web 2.0" (pronounced "web two point Oh") was conceived in 2005 to describe a new breed of websites that began to revolutionize how users interacted with information on the internet. Web 2.0 sites use newer web authoring tools (AJAX, Ruby on Rails, etc.), feature low learning curves for the user, and are usually built around harnessing the power of an information collective. The other nice piece about Web 2.0 is that most of the resources tend to be FREE.

There are seven main ideas that make up Web 2.0:

1. The Web as a Platform: in Web 2.0, the web itself becomes the computer

2. Harnessing Collective Intelligence: mobs replace a single expert

3. Data is the Next Intel Inside: metadata can be more important than data

4. End of the Software Release Cycle: perpetual beta is a good thing

5. Lightweight Programming Models: flexibility and speed make things better

6. Software Above the Level of a Single Device: convergence is the key

7. Rich User Experiences: make it better and they will use it

In a post on ResourceShelf.com, Shirl Kennedy, Deputy Editor present an article written by Tim O'Reilly on what is Web 2.0 What Is Web 2.0 : Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software

What is Library 2.0?

Library 2.0 is a concept still being defined. The basic components of this idea are centered on providing a richer patron experience at libraries by approaching traditional activities with a new user-centered focus. This may include, but is not limited to, using new technologies to communicate with users. One librarian, Christopher Harris from the Infomancy blog defines School Library 2.0 as being a digital re-shifting of the school library. That is using new tools to accomplish traditional activities in a more collaborative and interactive environment.
